Normalizing the Use of Single-Item Measures: Validation of the Single-Item Compendium for Organizational Psychology

The application of single-item measures has the potential to help applied researchers address conceptual, methodological, and empirical challenges. Based on a large-scale evidence-based approach, we empirically examined degree which various constructs in organizational sciences can be reliably validly assessed with single item. In study 1, across 91 selected constructs, 71.4% demonstrated strong if not very definitional correspondence (as measure content validity). 2, based heterogeneous sample working adults, demonstrate that majority little no comprehension or usability concerns. Study 3 provides evidence for reliability proposed test–retest reliabilities three temporal conditions (1 day, 2 weeks, 1 month). 4, issues construct criterion validity using multi-trait, multi-method approach. Collectively, 75 focal good extensive validity, evidencing moderate high concerns, reliability, validity. Finally, 5, argument only conceptually narrow measures. Results suggest there is relationship between subject matter expert evaluations breadth collected first four studies. Beyond providing an off-the-shelf compendium validated measures, abstract our validation steps roadmap replicate build upon. Limitations future directions are discussed.
